Gran Canaria can be visited at any time of year, making it a much-welcomed haven from the rigourous winters of northern Europe. For this reason, it is especially popular with foreign visitors during the winter months who welcome days spent lounging on one of its many beaches, taking a turn around one of the golf courses, shopping in the city or sightseeing around the island. The summer months see more Spanish visitors as many mainland Spaniards choose the island as their holiday destination for the customary summer break. Spring is also a favourite visiting time as the glorious weather accompanies the successive days of partying during Carnival, a much-awaited event in the capital. New Year’s Eve celebrations also draw many visitors to the island’s shores who are able to combine days spent on the beach with, the intense partying that takes place on Las Canteras beach. Witnessing the fabulous fireworks display on the beach to the tune of the ships’ sirens along the harbour on a lovely, warm evening is certainly a very appealing way of seeing the New Year in.
